In Loving Memory Of Quincy

I figured I should dedicate at least one blog post to the best dog I’ve ever known. His name was Quincy. A German-Shepherd Boxer mix. We didn’t find out what breed he was until much later in his life. Everyone thought he was a Plott Hound.

He crossed the rainbow bridge in January of last year. He was 10-11 years old. I think about him every day. I dreamt about him again the other night. He was his energetic self. He wasn’t in any pain. He seemed ecstatic when he came up to me in this dream. Then I woke up. I miss the positive energy he brought so deeply.

His precious face, beautiful brindle coat, his calm nature, his playfulness. He had so many lovable qualities. He’s the reason I gained a passion for exercise. Going outside with him helped me realize how important physical activity is. As a family, we all agreed he was our perfect dog. I remember the day he was brought home. Mom was holding him in her arms. She had been wanting another dog after going through a major surgery. The rest was history.

We made many, many fun memories with him over the course of his lifetime. Quincy’s favorite activities were walks, playtime, and eating. He wanted to eat his food, our food, even certain things outside. Obviously we kept him from doing that all the time. Sometimes he’d get away with it, I think he just acted that way to get us to focus all on him. Well, it worked on me countless times.

My parents and I would go to a small dog-friendly restaurant in CA after exercising. We’d be hungry after our morning strolls. The employees there adored Quincy. He couldn’t get enough of the special attention he received. They’d give him some bacon every time we went. His warm, welcoming presence made most people and other dogs feel comfortable around him.

He was quite the social butterfly. I wish I had it in me to present myself in a similar way. Having him with me in public made me feel safe enough to make small talk with other dog walkers.

He was there to cheer me up through many significant life events. Such as when other family members passed away. During the 2020 global lockdown when everything was unknown. After stressful days in high school and college. I don’t know how I would have managed without him. For all his good behavior, I would purchase Christmas dog stockings full of toys yearly for him after starting college. Which made me find joy in the holiday again.

I’m aware his passing took a huge toll on me. I haven’t felt the same since. I’ve been trying anything to fill the void. Maybe this is where some of my stress stems from. He was the sunshine of my life. I cherish every moment he spent with us. He was family after all.
