Comics Are The Best

I answered another Blaugust week 2 prompt! I figured this would give me a perfect chance to actually ramble on about comic books! I prefer some over movies and tv shows I’ve seen, to be honest. The stories for specific characters can flow so much better throughout multiple issues!

Right now, my favorite media for entertainment would be comics. I have been trying to get back into reading more, so this summer I decided to pick up comic books again. Outside of the big companies such as Marvel and DC, there are a lot of underrated comics that I’ve come to appreciate. I wish I could list some favorites, but I don’t think I can yet. There’s just too many, then I would feel bad about not including others. Maybe in the future I’ll attempt at putting together a proper list.

The artwork on the pages is sooo overlooked amongst comic fanbases. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about it in online spaces. The art is the core of every story. Our beloved favorite characters wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for artists! I tend to be a bit bias about illustrative work, but this is the truth. I have much respect for the creators who have worked many hours in their studios.

I’ve seen some gorgeous styles while exploring different series. Colorists are actually geniuses with their color choices. The colors are what set different tones depending on the emotion of a scene. Expressive line work always makes characters feel more fluid and lively. Which enriches the emotional expression of their shape language. I hope to incorporate some of those drawing techniques in my own work someday. I want to absorb it all in my mind.

Then of course! No comic could be complete without decent writing. There have been stories that have stuck with me long after I’ve read them. I tend to get attached when I’m able to follow several issues at a time. If the plot is written well, I tend to fall in love with the whole story.

What makes this hobby more enjoyable is critiquing details if I ever want to analyze them further. I remember one time, I read a comic with some forgettable aspects to it. I was even losing interest and focusing on other activities instead. On the bright side, when I was ready, I spent more time thinking about what I didn’t like about the story. I was able to find enjoyment in thinking critically about art.

It’s never too late to get into comic reading! At first I felt embarrassed for not starting sooner. Now I cherish the time I’ve spent discovering characters and their worlds. I never would have found new favorites if I hadn’t given these books a chance.
