Art Book Finds

I visited my local bookstore this morning, and left with 2 new books!! The Sketch by Robert S. Oliver with The Joy of Watercolor by David Millard. Funny story, I had gotten More Joy of Watercolor (the sequel book) first. Now I can go through both in the correct order. I think I would have been confused if I had started the second one by now.

I have a large amount of watercolor books on my bookshelf. I don’t think I could ever have enough in my collection. Even if I don’t apply every new technique into my art, it’s still good to read about various artists’ workflow. What inspired them to start painting….all that stuff.

The books that feel like straightforward, step-by-step tutorials aren’t as interesting to read these days. I know they have a purpose, but I can’t stick with them all the time. Maybe it has to do with how there are so many how-to painting videos online.

I prefer more descriptive text in books. A few paragraphs explaining all the specifics of how a technique can benefit the final painting. As if the artist/author is really telling me everything. I love when an author doesn’t shy away from the details.

There are lots of art resources in the area. I’m forever grateful for what I’ve been able to discover in the last few years. It must be useful for the students at the local university, too. It’s heartwarming how much the town actively helps each other stay inspired.
